    EARLY HARVEST THIS YEAR--Cornell Cooperative Extension of St.Lawrence County Field Crops Educator Stephen Canner told us the warmest growing season in decades will push up the clock for harvesting corn and soybeans especially. Hay cuttings have been 'very good' this year. Canner says yields for both corn silage and grain corn are expected to be better than usual. He says on-time corn planting, which has not been the norm recently contributes to that.

    STATE APPELLATE JUDGE STALLS SMOKE TAX--Justice Samuel Green ruled Wednesday to reinstate a January, 2009 restraining order on the implementation of the state tax to Native American on-reservation cigarette sales to non-natives. The ruling affects sales by all tribes in the state, including the local Mohawks. A five-justice panel will rule next week.

    STIMULUS TEACHER MONEY WON'T HELP MUCH LOCALLY, POTSDAM SUPER SAYS--Potsdam School Superintendent Pat Brady told us recently a dose of Federal funds (a total of 608 million dollars statewide) will not help restore teachers cut in the last budget process; like most local schools the money will be needed for the next budget process because the stimulus ends the following year and they need to be ready. Canton Central Superintendent Bill Gregory told North Country Public Radio only one teacher position will be filled; the rest of the half-million Canton will gets will be held onto for the next budget process.

    HOT, HUMID WEATHER IN THE NORTH COUNTRY WILL KEEP HURRICANE EARL AT BAY--National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Neilson told us this morning the high temperatures and high moisture content will essentially deflect the hurricane from the Northeast, keeping it held to the southern Mid-Atlantic before going out to sea.  An ozone advisory is in effect until 11 tonight, the air quality will be dangerous for sensitive persons.
    HEUVELTON MARCHING BAND FINALIST IN PEPSI 'REFRESH' CONTEST, WINS 25-GRAND--The Heuvelton band was number 4 in the rankings for latest round online votes in the beverage company's giving program.  The band plans to buy new instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
    NO CHARGES FOR DRIVER IN HELENA CHILD FATAL--State Police said late yesterday no charges will be filed against 53-year-old Michael Guldan, whose car struck and killed 6-year-old Ben Byler as he was crossing County Route 37 Monday afternoon.  St.Lawrence County Coroner June Wood ruled the cause of the child's death accidental.
    ROUTE 420 CRASH KNOCKS OUT POWER--Massena-based State Police say 26-year-old Keith Benedict of Norfolk traveled off the pavement in the Town of Norfolk into a utility pole about 5:45am Tuesday.  Massena Electric customers in the Mahoney Rd. and surrounding neighborhoods were without service for a time as the break was repaired.
    FOUR INJURIES FROM STAR LAKE AREA ATV-CAR COLLISION--Sheriff's deputies say a 4-wheeler operated by a 15-year-old with two 16-year-old passengers making a turn at the crest of a hill on Youngs Road in the Town of Fine was struck by a car from behind Tuesday.  The car was driven by 17-year-old Michael Boshane of Star Lake.  Boshane and his passenger, Nelson Martin III of Star Lake; and all three teens on the ATV were transported by ambulance to Clifton-Fine Hospital, treated and released.  Injuries were reported to be minor.  No tickets issued at this time; the investigation is not complete.
