RUSSELL EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT ABOUT POSSIBLE TOPS NORTH COUNTRY SELL-OFF--Addie Russell, 118th Assembly District representative told a near-capacity crowd at Massena Town Hall Saturday she feels duped by Tops Friendly Markets possible move to sell stores in Potsdam, Canton, Gouverneur, Massena, and other North Country locations to a non-union buyer. United Food and Commercial Workers Union represents most P&C-Tops employees. Russell says she had no indication a sell-off was even being discussed. Price Chopper is believed to be the non-union grocer that could get the properties.
HEUVELTON SHOOTING INVESTIGATED--State Police and St.Lawrence County Sheriff's Detectives are looking into what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot incident at a residence on State Street in Heuvelton about 8:20pm Saturday. The victim is believed to a male between 17 and 21.
STATE'S HIGHEST COURT REJECTS OXLEY CASE--The New York State Court of Appeals has refused without comment to review a motion filed by the St.Lawrence County District Attorney's Office, based on a ruling by the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court calling for a new trial on the 44-year-old Oxley of Ogdensburg, convicted of killing Bernard Trickey, Jr. with a baseball bat in 2005. Oxley's defense was successful in arguing before the appellate justices County Judge Jerome Richards refused to allow witness testimony that "Chase" Webb threatened to kill Trickey before the murder took place. A new trial is expected to start in March; until that time Oxley is in County lockup on bail.
VAUGHN CASE DISMISSED--42-year-old Lisa Vaughn of Carthage, convicted of third degree rape for having sex with a Gouverneur state prison inmate, was the subject of a January 29th ruling by St.Lawrence County Judge Jerome Richards that it would be 'manifestly unfair' for the conviction stand, while the sex crime cases aginst two others were dropped. DA Nicole Duve says there is a possibility the Vaughn case may see Grand Jury action in the near future.
CANTON WINTERFEST CHILI COOK-OFF BRINGS RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES--27 different chilis were tasted by the judges at the Canton VFW Saturday. Joyce Dalton of Canton, ironically the wife of the Canton Fire Chief, won the second year in a row. The event has raised thousads of dollars for the Fire Department since 1994; it has grown to one of the more popular events during Canton Winterfest. There were so many electric pots brought in by contestants on Saturday, the circuit breaker tripped the lights off twice.

DOG IMPLICATED WITH SLU BITE INCIDENT HAS CURRENT, COMPLETE SHOT RECORDS--St.Lawrence University announced Friday the owner of a dog that bit someone on the Kip Trail Tuesday has met with the victim and University Safety and Security, averting the need for the victim to get rabies shots.
POTSDAM MAN ARRESTED FOR RAPE EARLIER THIS WEEK FACES ADDITIONAL SEX FELONY--25-year-old Dustin Musick, arrested Monday on two counts of third degree rape alleging relations with a 15-year-old girl this summer; was arrested Friday on an additional count of third degree rape alleging relations with a 16-year-old girl in October. Musick was arraigned before Stockholm Justice Wayne Williams and jailed on the original charge in lieu of 10-thousand dollars cash bail or 20-thousand dollars bail bond; Village Justice Tim Welch added another 5-thousand dollars cash bail Friday for the new charge.
POTSDAM CHILD PORN CASE BRINGS ARREST--Potsdam Police say US Immigration and Customs Enforcement assistance helped in the investigation of 40-year-old David LaBrake, accused of possessing images and videos of underage persons in sexually-explicit scenarios. LaBrake was charged with a felony possession count Friday, arraigned and released to probation supervision until a court date Wednesday.

WADDINGTON MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY SEX CRIME--Sheriff's Detectives say 46-year-old Timothy Johnson of County Route 33 allegedly subjected a child less than 11 years of age to forcibl sexual contact. Johnson was arraigned this morning on a felony count of Criminal Sexual Act and a misdemeanor count of Engandering The Welfare of a Child and jailed on 20-thousand dollars cash bail or 40-thousand dollars bail bond.
UNUSUAL TRESPASSING ARREST IN MASSENA--Village Police arrested 20-year-old Barry Hill III of Water Street Thursday night on a misdemeanor trespassing charge and a harassment violation alleging he entered a woman's residence without permission, licked her feet and sucked on her toes. Hill was held in police lockup until arraignment.
OWENS SUPPORTS REPEAL OF 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL'--Bill Owens, the 23rd Congressional District Representative says he is supporting the end of the policy barring homosexual servicemembers from revealing their orientation, based on the stance of previous Congressman, now US Secretary of The Army John Mc.Hugh who supports the repeal, and discussions with military and top government leadership.
DOG, OWNER SOUGHT IN SLU BITE CASE--A dog described as medium-sized, brown, black, and white resembling an Austrailian Shepherd bit someone on the Kip Trail on campus February 2nd. The victim will have to get rabies shots if dog and owner are not found. The owner was believed to wearing a yellowish winter coat.
